Publishers note.

We looked up from the ground and saw a blue cloudless sky extending to the horizon. Below us was a bay, with ships moving on it. They were as small as toys. It was a textbook beautiful day, but we felt ill at ease. We went out for lunch. We lay in the dappled shade of the tree. We ran to the middle of the field. But still, we had that nervous feeling.

It started to get dark and we had a long way ahead of us. We went along the stone wall, we passed the farm houses set back from the road. We watched the fireflies come out and the children chase after them. But we didn’t speak at all, and our faces were strained.

Finally, we got to the house and got ready for bed. As soon as we hit the covers a huge wind rose up rattling the windows. It was extremely discomfiting to lay there in the dark listening to the screaming of the wind. But it was a relief to finally be able to place the feeling that had been dogging us all day.
